Bad Policy That Hurts America
The continuation of Affirmative Action when a Black man and a Woman are asking for our support for the top jobs in the US Government and one will achieve it. Isn't this a clear sign that change is something that has to be made. If we don't seek to discontinue this policy that at one time was needed and now is a relic of a bygone era we don't offer the best a brightest the opportunity the deserve. Each and every person should be considered for their accomplishments, abilities and their character for anything from education, jobs, government service and especially leadership. If they don't have a background that shows this then we need to find someone who does. And that person should have the same rights, no more and no less that anyone being considered.
If Affirmative Action and other limiting legislation that pits people and groups against each other we will continue to divide America. We can never be "We The People" because we aren't all the same and that just isn't what this country was founded on.
I disagree. Until we have true parity between all minorities, we need some sort of policy to level the playing field.
The simple fact is that I will have a much better chance of getting a better job, with better pay than any minority, simply because I am white.
I will get a better education (generally speaking) than minorities, because my parents were able to live in better neighborhoods where there were higher real estate taxes that funded the schools, while many minorities are in lower funded districts because their real estate taxes are lower, and thus their schools more poorly funded.
I will get treated better (generally speaking) by law enforcement - for whatever reason, and there are many studies to prove this, which you can google yourselves.
That and more!
I think it's wonderful to believe that we should all treat each other equally, and that this country is a meritocracy, but history shows time and time again where that's just not the way that it has worked. I'm not saying we shouldn't strive to be that way, but without equity - how do you propose we get there?
I graduated from a high school in a county where 45% of the adult population had attended college, and 85% graduated high school. The school system had a full arts program, sports programs as well as technical and vocational programs. 55% of families made more than $50,000 per year. It was also 94% white, 4.5% black, 1.5% other.
Compare that to areas where there are none of those things - areas like Baltimore where 60% of households make less than $35,000 per year, and 60% of the population never graduates from High School. How can someone - no matter how naturally gifted they are - be able to compete with someone from my community?
They have to work just to get to the starting line while I'm already halfway to the finish.
There are certainly cases where Affirmative Action is misapplied. Just like there are cases where guilty men go free, and innocent men get imprisoned. Does that mean we just do away with the whole thing?
I agree with Ken 100%. Times have changed and the way that people think have changed. Every job that you go to they tell you that they are an equal opportunity employer. I beleive that the Affirmative Action plan takes away from that. Jobs should only be given to the people that are the most qualified and deserving of the position. It doesn't matter what your race or gender is.
jackriter says:
"If you are better qualified for a job, you deserve it. I do support class based affirmative action though, why does the millionare deserve a job that if I don't get, will cause me to starve."
Using this logic you should be able to get a job as a top attorney at high end law firm just because they haven't hired any people that make less than 20K a year. Hell lets make you my brain surgeon while were at it.
hey ShadowRyu it shouldnt be class nor race based because once ppl say its just class then they will want it for race its the same thing a slavery repreations its just a stupid way to promote racsim even though ur trying to "reverse" they effects.... oh shut up people slavery ended 145 year ago GET OVER IT!! sry for getting off topic but u noe im right

No, becuase I lack the proper qualifications to do so. If I am qualified to be a brain sugeon and make 20K a year, why should the man making 100K get it before me?
No job should be class based or race based. It should be based on who is the most qualified. Unfortunately that has been ignored favoring race and not intelligence or qualifications. In reality, America has gone all out for minorities and look what has happened. These touchy feel good loans have caused what we are realizing today, and that is bank failures. Ignorant voters deserve what they get and they are going to see a depression. It's unfortunate as Clinton allowed many factory jobs to go overseas. Now we have to print more money so now it will be inflation. I remember the Carter days and they were hard. Look at what this Democrat Congress has achieved. Higher prices across the board on necessities. Obama isn't going to fix doodle squat. He'll make it worse. I'm a child who grew up under parents who grew up during the depression. They ate a lot of corn but now corn is going into the gas tank. Thank you Al Gore, another democrat who is now a multi millionaire with his global warming hoax. No more liberal BS for me!
Why do we need to get off oil ASAP? We have plenty of it. We even have the man power and technology to get it without harming the environment. Wouldn't it be best to use our own oil while searching for alternatives? We are years away from the liberal ideal. What is the purpose of oil in the earth? It's never stopped anything, climate wise. Check the history before oil has been used. There was much famine so what was that due to? Mining fossil fuels? They weren't being mined.
