An article about a ballot initiative that would legalize industrial hemp in Oregon. This is a great idea and would probably pass pretty easily here except that the initiative would also legalize the sale and taxation of marijuana... that irks me. I'm for legalizing marijuana, it's a waste of money otherwise, but most people clearly are not of the same mindset. So now instead of getting legalized industrial hemp (which is a great cash crop usable for so many different products, and is also said to be the reason why marijuana was first made illegal) we will probably get nothing. Now if the bill does pass count me a fool and a vagabond, but I doubt it will fly when they run it up the flagpole.  Other states though, and other countries, are trying to get in on the wonders of industrialized hemp.  North Dakota, however, legalized industrial hemp and then some farmers got busted by the DEA for growing the hemp the state told them they could grow.  Industrialized hemp has the opportunity to do a lot of great things for the economy, I just wish it wasn't being tied to legalized marijuana.

It may be decades before our politicians can approach issues like this without hyperventilating and exploiting it for political purposes.
