NCLB? Yeah, right

First of all, NCLB calls for mathmatically impossible results. Second, the testing used for NCLB isn't fair, because special ed students and other kids with learning disabilities obviously won't perform as well. Third, punishing the schools is NOT going to help. Any responses to this are welcome. Just try to stay civil.

agrees with the original post

I was still in school when NCLB came to be. The biggest complaint that I heard from the teachers and then I found out when test season came around is the fact that teachers will take time out of their normal curriculum to teach students how to take this particular test. So the end result is that students do not learn as much valid information or if the teachers don't teach the test the district is penalized. I think making schools accountable for their students is a terrific idea this is just not quite the correct way to do so.

I am a teacher and the system is so screwed up. For instance, if a school's entire SYSTEM (we have over 40 schools) misses reaching one demographic, the entire system is considered to be non-compliant. We are forced to give one multiple choice test after another, plus "benchmark" exams, and we wonder why we're so far behind the rest of the world in higher-order thinking skills. How many times have we been faced with multiple choice tests in the real world? NCLB is a good idea but is implemented in the wrong way. Tests don't equal learning.

Savor the irony -- the only way you can believe in NCLB is if you don't believe in arithmetic.

NCLB is a complete joke. The principle behind it will never work. The Government trying to mandate excellence? Our government? That in itself is irony.
