The Center for American Progress is a think tank dedicated to improving the lives of Americans through ideas and action, combining bold policy ideas to help shape the national debate to expose the hollowness of conservative governing philosophies.

Background

Based in Washington D.C. with offices in California, four distinct groups of issues comprise the focus of the Center with studies concerning National Security, Domestic & Economy, Energy & Environment, and Media & Culture.

  • Founded in 2003, CAP is headed by John Podesta, former chief of staff to President Bill Clinton and professor at the Georgetown University Center of Law. CAP is designed to provide long-term leadership and support to the progressive movement. Our ability to develop thoughtful policy proposals and engage in the war of ideas with conservatives is unique and effective. (Source: CAP)

  • According to a 2003 article in the New York Times, Podesta's "goal is to build an organization to rethink the very idea of liberalism, a reproduction in mirror image of the conservative think tanks that have dominated the country's political dialogue for a generation.

Structure

CAP covers a wide range of issue areas, and often work across disciplines to tackle complex, interrelated issues such as national security, energy, and climate change. This year, CAP pushing to keep four leading issues at the center of the national debate:

  • Restoring America's global leadership
  • Seizing the energy opportunity
  • Creating progressive growth
  • Delivering universal health care (Source: CAP)
