Background

Christianity is the major religion of the western world. Approximately a quarter of the world's population is affiliated with it.

Christianity believes that Jesus of Nazareth, a middle eastern Jew alive in the era about 1 CE, was the son of God. Texts written in subsequent years (New Testament), combined with Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament), are collectively now known as the Bible, which is of paramount importance to Christians.

Christianity began by the spreading of Jesus' story by his disciples after his death. The religion spread through the Greek/Roman world.

Structure

There are many different denominations of Christianity, each with slightly different teachings and belief systems. The central tenets, however, include the divinity of Christ, his resurrection, the virgin birth and the omnipotence of God.
