A committee of the Senate empowered with legislative oversight of all matters relating to the nation's agriculture industry, farming programs, forestry and logging, and legislation relating to nutrition and health.
Background
The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry was created in 1825 at the behest of Sen. William Findlay (R-PA), who claimed that agriculture was part of the "three great branches of domestic industry," the other two being commerce and manufacturing.
The political, economic and commercial environment of the 19th century was intimately interested in agriculture. As such, the need for a standing committee on agriculture in the Senate was slim. In 1857 as Special Committee was assigned to develop greater efficiency within the committee system, and the Committee on Agriculture was dissolved.
However, in 1862 President Lincoln signed the Organic Act, recreating the Department of Agriculture and later, in 1884, the Committe on Agriculture and Forestry was created. Renamed again in 1977 to the Committe on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry due to the Food and Agriculture Act, it has remained named so ever since.

Tom Harkin (D) Chairman Elected to the House in 1974, he served until 1984, when he moved on to the Senate where he currently sits. In 1990 he wrote the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), making him best known for his advocacy of that group. |

Saxby Chambliss (R) Ranking Member Chambliss was elected in 1994 to the House (Georgia) with the Republican Revolution that took Congress that year. In 2002, he won a seat in the Senate where he has gained a firm conservative record and an authority on terrorism and homeland security. |
