The Confederate flag has been described as either a proud emblem of Southern heritage or as a shameful reminder of slavery and segregation. Considerable controversy has arisen about the nature of the flag being flown on public grounds.

The decision to fly the flag is a states' decision along with the public. But because of the negativity surrounding the flag, some say it should not be flown or displayed in public places.
