Some Congressional Democrats have called for the impeachment of President George W. Bush for concerns related to the legality of the Iraq War and/or the constitutionality of the surveillance program launched as apart of the President's War on Terror.

Background

  • On 8 December 2006 Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) introduced articles of impeachment against President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and Secretary of State Rice. The bill expired that day, the final day of the 109 congress.
  • On 22 July 2007, Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) announced that he will introduce two censure resolutions condemning the President, Vice President and other administration officials for misconduct relating to the Iraq war and for violating the law in respect to the NSA's surveillance program, policies related to Guantanamo, and firings of U.S. Attorneys (Source: senate.gov). He also stated on NBC's Meet the Press, "there's a lot of sentiment in the country...for actually impeaching the President and the Vice President. I think that they have committed impeachable offenses with regard to this terrorist surveillance program and making up their own program." Feingold later referring to censure as a "moderate course."
  • In July 2006, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) stated on a Texas radio show, "I would have trouble arguing that he's been a Constitutional President, and once you violate the Constitution and be proven to do that I think these people should be removed from office (Source: ImpeachPAC).
