Do you support National I.D. Cards? Yes | No

National ID cards have been proposed as means to bolster national security and weed out illegal immigrants.

Background

  • National ID cards have been proposed in varying levels over the past few years. One proposal would simply be a driver's license that would be tied to a national database and another envisions a card that would hold extensive data on it's owner. The latter may include sensitive information such as a person's Social Security number, medical history, drivers license and passport information, or even DNA.

Supporters

Supporters of National ID cards point to positive implications of such a system. Such as:

  • Crime reduction
  • Quicker, more accurate medical care
  • Prevention of terrorism
  • Easier identification of felons and sex offenders
  • Less identity theft
  • Reduction of illegal immigrants
  • Faster travel times

Opponents

Opponents of such a system fear that the negative consequences outweigh the positive effects. Such as:

  • Invasion of privacy
  • More identity theft
  • Possible gun owner database

Recent Legislation

  • The REAL ID Act of 2005 imposed federal technological standards and verification procedures on state driver's licenses and voluntary identification cards.
  • In July 2007, New Haven, Conn., began issuing the first city-sponsored ID cards, regardless of citizenship status. It establishes legal identity and residency and allows cardholders to access basic services.
  • San Francisco and New York are currently debating similar proposals.
