Do you support Weather Tax? Yes | No

Following concerns by some that everyone's tax dollars are spent to clean up predictable natural disasters such as hurricanes in Florida and floods in the Mississippi Valley, some have called for people in high-risk areas to pay a "weather tax".

Background

Debate

Support

  • Supporters oppose the idea that every taxpaying citizen should pay for the rebuilding efforts of a few people who live in areas with predictably destructive weather.

Oppose

  • Opposition centers around those receiving aid after destructive weather phenomena, who often lack the funds to pay for rebuilding or additional taxes. An example would be New Orleans' "Lower 9th Ward", heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina, and also the poorest part of the city.
  • Precedent also supports the Federal Government's role in rebuilding without charging for those efforts.
