Two New Members for House
Associated Press

The House on Thursday welcomed two new members, Republicans from Virginia and Ohio who won special elections last Tuesday.

Ohio state legislator Robert Latta will finish out the term of the late Rep. Paul Gillmor, who died last September, as representative of Ohio's 5th District. The northwestern Ohio district has been held by Republicans, including Latta's father Delbert Latta from 1959 to 1989, since the 1930s.

The new representative for Virginia's 1st District, another GOP stronghold in the eastern part of the state, is Rob Wittman, a former health department official and current state legislator. He succeeds Republican Jo Ann Davis, who died of breast cancer last October.

Their addition brings the balance in the House to 233 Democrats and 201 Republicans. The only vacancy is the seat of former Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., who resigned last month.
