A Medal of Honor recipient during WWII and Hawaii's first representatitve after becoming a state, Inouye served in the House for Hawaii from 1959-63 and was elected to the Senate in 1963. Recently, he was one of 7 Democrats in the "Gang of 14" in 2005.
