David Dewhurst's Biography

Background

  • Dewhurst is a veteran of the US Air Force, CIA and US State Department. After leaving US public service, he founded Falcon Seaboard in 1981.
  • He is a successful Black Angus rancher and enjoys being a team roper and rides cutting horses.

Career

  • Dewhurst returned to public service when he was elected as the Texas statewide land commissioner, 1999-2003.
  • Elected Lieutenant Governor, 2002-Present.

Lieutenant Governor

  • He is best known for his "Texas Children First" initiative which cracks down on child sex abuse crimes.
  • He proposed a controversial law that would allow the death penalty for 2nd offense violent child abuse that never passed. The bill was controversial because the death penalty is considered unconstitutional for any crime except murder.
