David Vitter's Biography

Background

  • Vitter was born and raised in New Orleans.
  • B.A. from Harvard University, 1983; a B.A. from Oxford University in 1985, as a Rhodes Scholar.
  • J.D. Tulane University Law School, 1988.
  • Vitter's wife, Wendy, is a former prosecutor. Together they have three daughters and a son (Sophie, Lise, Airey and Jack).

Career

  • Louisiana House of Representatives, 1992-1999.
  • US House of Representatives, 1999-2005. Elected by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Rep Robert L. Livingston, Jr. In 2001, Vitter co-authored legislation to restrict the number of physicians allowed to prescribe the "morning after pill." The bill died in committee. He is also known his his 2001 Amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, that required all federally funded schools to allow US military recruiting on campus.
  • United States Senate, 2005-present.

Accomplishments

Criticism

  • In early July 2007, Vitter's phone number was included in a published list of phone records of Pamela Martin and Associates. The company is a known prostitution service and is owned and run by Deborah Jeane Palfrey, also known as the "D.C. Madam" (Source: Washington Post).
  • During his 2004 campaign, Vitter was accused by a member of the Louisiana Republican State Central Committee of having had a lengthy affair with a prostitute in New Orleans. Vitter denied the allegation, saying it was "absolutely and completely untrue...just crass Louisiana politics."(Source: Washington Post).
  • Vitter was called an "antichoice extremist" for his bill that would restrict the use of the "morning after pill" (Source: Kaiser Network).

Recent Developments

  • On 13 November 2007, the attorney for Palfrey served Vitter with a subpoena to force him to testify at a hearing about a Palfrey escort. The case judge canceled the hearing the following week. Palfrey's attorney indicated he planned to subpoena Vitter to testify at her 2008 criminal trial (Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune).
