Prior to being appointed Secretary of the Interior in 2006, Kempthorne had a rich career in public service. Serving as Senator from Idaho from 1993-9, he later became Governor (1999-2006). He has a reputation for consensus building and conservatism.

Dirk Kempthorne was born October 29, 1951 in San Diego, California. Kempthorne graduated San Gorgonio High School and attended the University of Idaho, where he graduated from as well. Upon graduation, he served as the assistant to the Idaho Department of Lands.
In 1982 managed the failed gubernatorial campaign for then Lt. Gov. Phil Batt. Kempthorne became state public affairs manager for FMC Corporation in 1983.
Kempthorne was elected mayor of Boise, Idaho in 1985. After seven years, he then went on to become a Governor in 1993.
