- Recieved his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from UK in 1968 and his master's and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1970 and 1973.

- Co-founded the Kentucky Science and Technology Corp.
- A member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the American Council on Education (ACE) and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges.
- Became the 11th president of the University of Kentucky in 2001.
