Larry Craig's Biography

Background

  • Larry Craig was born in Council, Idaho on 20 July 1945 and grew up on a ranch outside Midvale in Washington County.
  • B.A., University of Idaho, 1969.
  • Idaho Army National Guard, 1970-1972
  • Craig married Suzanne Thompson in 1983 and adopted her three children. Craig has nine grandchildren.

Career

  • Idaho Senate, 1974-1980.
  • US House of Representatives, 1980-1991.
  • US Senate, 1991-present.

Criticism

  • Craig was implicated in a 1982 House page scandal in which teenage pages were given drugs and pressured to engage in sexual activity with Congressmen. Craig denied his involvement, calling the allegations "despicable" (Source: ABC).
  • Accusations of sexual misconduct have followed Craig since 1967. The Idaho Statesman newspaper conducted a five-month investigation into a series of charges of homosexual liaisons and innuendos. Craig denied charges of "cruising" a man at an REI store in Boise in 1994 by saying, "I've been in this business 27 years in the public eye here. I don't go around anywhere hitting on men, and by God, if I did, I wouldn't do it in Boise, Idaho! Jiminy!" The press has called out Craig on his condemnation of the Bill Clinton affair after Craig's airport bathroom incident (Source: The Sleuth).

Recent Developments

  • On 11 June 2007, Craig was arrested for lewd conduct in the men's bathroom at the Minneapolis-St after an undercover police officer said Craig sat down in a stall next to him and used hand and foot signals to indicate he was soliciting sex. Craig said his actions were misread and that he was not gay (Source: Routers).
  • Craig pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct on 8 August 2007 and announced his intention to resign from the Senate at a news conference on 1 September 2007, which was to become effective on September 30, 2007. Craig failed to withdraw his guilty plea and subsequently released a statement refusing to resign as Senator for Idaho. Craig has stated that he will not run for re-election in 2008 (Source: Routers).
  • On 8 March 2008, a Minneapolis man arrested in the same airport bathroom sex sting that netted Craig has been acquitted (Source: Associated Press).
