Michelle Schimel's Biography

Michelle Schimel was born in Brooklyn and has been a resident of Great Neck for 24 years. Her years as North Hempstead Town Clerk serve as a model of accomplishment. Her hard work and broad appeal have enabled Michelle in her last two elections to secure the largest percentage of votes of any town-wide official.

Michelle brings to her Office a record of strong leadership, innovation and fiscal responsibility. She works tirelessly to make government, more efficient, and transparent. She is universally recognized among her peers as a leader and reformer. Michelle represents the fifth largest town in New York State, with over 222,000 residents.

Accomplishments as Town Clerk:

* Michelle received bipartisan support for a Town-wide referendum to increase the term of Town Clerk to 4 years.  Sponsored by Republican Councilman Angelo Ferrara, the proposition won 2 to 1.
* Michelle has received several state appointments. Recognized for her strong management and advocacy skills, she was appointed by the State Education Department to serve on the Local Government Records Advisory Council that sets guidelines for municipalities about the security and accessibility of vital identity documents.
* In 2006, Michelle was selected to serve on the New York State “Cyber-Security Panel” in conjunction with Homeland Security to review Internet policies for local governments throughout the state. 
* Michelle is the only Registered Municipal Town Clerk in Nassau County, having satisfied the state’s stringent educational requirement.

Advocacy

* A lifelong community activist, Michelle serves on the board of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV), the largest citizens' group in New York State dedicated to reducing gun-related violence.
* In 1995, as Vice President and member of the Executive Board of NYAGV, Michelle and Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy co-founded the Long Island Chapter.

Community Involvement

* Formerly a Physical Therapist at North Shore University Hospital, Michelle is one of a select few medical professionals to be board certified in wound care.
* A catalyst for change at North Shore, Michelle created protocols and introduced new treatments for diabetic and vascular surgery patients.
* Former Vice-President of a multi-million fashion jewelry company.
* Former Trustee and Membership Chairperson of Temple Beth-El of Great Neck

Michelle is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and lives in Great Neck with her husband Mark. They have two sons: Alex, a law student and Spencer, a college sophomore.
