- 1963: Received his J.D. from American University after taking night classes and Congressional sessions.
1994: Received a B.A. from Marshall University.

- 1951–1952: Served in the West Virginia Senate.

- Byrd has been criticized for his association with the KKK, which he joined in 1942, at the age of 24. He was elected "Exalted Cyclops" of his local chapter.
- Byrd filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for 14 hours.
