Strom Thurmond was the Fmr. Governor of South Carolina and also served as that state's Senator until he was 100 years old. He is remembered for an irascible, southern personality and his support of South Carolina's pro-segregation Jim Crow laws of the 50s.

In 1948, Strom Thurmond ran for President as the "Dixiecrat" candidate. This party had formed as a result of Southern Democrats having been angered by Truman's civil rights policies. In the election, Thurmond received 2.4% of the vote (1,175,930 votes), and earned 39 electoral votes by carrying South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and one of Tennessee's 12 votes.
