Presidential Bid

In 1948, Strom Thurmond ran for President as the "Dixiecrat" candidate. This party had formed as a result of Southern Democrats having been angered by Truman's civil rights policies. In the election, Thurmond received 2.4% of the vote (1,175,930 votes), and earned 39 electoral votes by carrying South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and one of Tennessee's 12 votes.
