Requests for site pins...?

How about someone getting a pie in the face? or sinking ship? or Capitol in flames?or globe on fire?

I am a little dark today.

Is Al going to announce soon?

OK, he won. I am sure he will now wait and see if Hillary stumbles.

But What If My Thoughts Are Pure?

Don't you think that if we actually were able to do a poll of all the founders of our country, they would not only vote for the burn but would provide the flint?

Symbol of Modern Governmental Corruption

The depressing part is that he has been so good at delivering the bacon to Alaska that he will probably be re-elected as long as he not actually in prison at the time.

He is lacking a campaign staff so a run would be logistically hard. Having said that, Gore has made a lot of money thanks to being an adviser to Google since 2000 (with stock options). If he wins the Nobel Peace Prize this week, it would be an interesting platform.....

What is Florida thinking?

To the chagrin of the Democratic party, Florida has moved its primary up to January 29th. The Party is seeing their delegates won't count at the convention and many of the candidates are honoring the ban.

I understand wanting to have your influence on the selection of the party candidate, but why risk having no influence.

As someone who lives in California, Florida has gotten a lot more attention than us given its role as a swing state. How vain is this state?

I think they should just stick to the old schedule.

No Royalty in America

It seems kind of weird to me, as well. If Hillary were elected and served two terms, we would have a Bush or Clinton in the White House from 1988 until 2016. That doesn't even count George H.W. Bush as Vice President for four years. I have a hard time believing those two families were the best we had in a country of 300 million people over a 28 year period.

Should we bring back a different kind of draft?

Yes. Larry Sabato, a Professor of mine at UVa, has written a new book, "A More Perfect Constitution." One of the things he suggests is exactly what you are suggesting. That all citizens are required to do a term of service that can be filled in many different ways: military, teach for america, habitat for humanity, police service, etc. I think getting citizens to understand that they need to give back to the country in some way would be a valuable lesson and make them better and more understanding in whatever career they chose to pursue.

"Female Reproductive Rights" does not equal abortion

Will spend a bit of time on it tomorrow.  Everyone is running a bit out of steam (we have been up a while).  My guess is that under the issue [yet to be named] you would have to have sub-issues.  Lots of Americans when asked are for keeping Roe v Wade, but also for any restrictions that can be applied to it.

Good point.  It was originally titled Abortion and it created a bit of a problem as to how the page was built.  It asked "Do you support Abortion?" which not a lot of people would want to answer yes to.

this is just me, but...

I have a tough time on this especially as a white male (therefore never having fully walked in another's shoes).  I do give some credence to the idea that we have to try to right past wrongs by tilting the playing field a bit, but at the same time, you point is a good one.  I would hate to have a hire or admission always being questioned based on whether it was honestly earned or the result of affirmative action.  Leaves me without a clear position.

The awkward laugh is hard to listen to.  It is nice to see these dudes who are putting other people on the spot get a little of their own medicine.

Welcome and how to get started

Welcome to Political Base!  This site is born out of our collective frustration with politics, politicians, and the state of the national dialogue.  This site is less about what it is now, but rather what it can be.  Even though we are a small team, we aspire to much and have structured the site to cover not just federal, but also state, county and city politics.  This is a chance for us all to participate in making the system better by contributing and sharing what we know and believe.

You might ask, "What can I possibly add?"  Here are some places you might start:

Vote on a person.  Pick a person you like or don't like, search for them and go to the box titled Public Perception.  You can vote by sliding the arrows and providing your own opinion on each of the four items.

Vote for or against someone or something.  Find a person, group or issue you like or don't like, and answer the question, "Do you support [fill in the blank] Yes | No?"  If you are not registered, it will ask you to do so.  If you go to MyBase, the site will keep track of what you support and don't support.

Start or participate in a forum.  Go to the forums tab and join in one of the discussions.

Write a blog entry.  If you are registered, go to MyBase and click the New Blog Entry button and begin writing.

Tell us something we should add or improve.  We want your help making this site as good as it can be.  The easiest way to give us feedback is to go to this thread

Update an existing person, group, or issue.  You will see a button in the upper left corner and click it.  You will see all the information for that item.  Change or add to it.  Don't worry, your changes don't go directly live but are checked by a moderator prior to posting.

Those are some good ways to jump right in to being part of the Political Base community.  There is a lot more than you can do with the site, but you will figure that out as you go. We are very happy to have you join us, and all hope that our collective contributions will make politics a little more accessible and understandable for citizens.

Best.

Shelby

Indie run for President?

I am sure that he would love to but at the same time is incredibly practical. If he thinks there is a window or need, I would bet that he steps in.

Al Gore to sweep in at last moment?

The wild car is does he win the Nobel Peace Prize and then get swept in over frustration with the current slate. Hard to think that Obama or Hillary will stumble that badly.

What do you think about fee based government?

In a prefect world that would be the case, but people require different levels of services and have different abilities to pay.  Other possible ways to deal with this would be to tax people on consumption (more you consume more you pay) or on wealth (as a percentage of what you own in assets).  I think consumption is the more interesting route (it would encourage saving).
