"Dance on Tom Paine's bones"
I arrived upon invitation of Mark Nickolas.
I blog because I believe that being a passive citizen in a democracy is not an option. My family has a long history of democratic participation, from financing and fighting in the War of the Revolution, through establishing local and county governments, to serving as public office holders, to fighting on both sides in the War of Southern Rebelllion, to campaigning and holding public office myself. I have sued government and have been sued by government. For me this is not a profession, nor an avocation, nor pastime. I consider my actions and involvement as a necessary cost to protect my rights of personal freedom.
I also believe that in fighting for one's personal freedom, one also advances society as a whole. For the most part, the advances daily go unnoticed and appear only as incremental. But over a span of years the advances are cumulative and ultimately effective.
Being active politically is a tax upon my person and a tax upon my enjoyment of liberty. However, it is a tax I pay joyfully - more than any other. I am thrilled to dance on Tom Paine's bones.
